Half Moon Jamaica – Review of Half Moon Resort Jamaica

Half Moon Jamaica – Review of Half Moon Resort Jamaica

When we first honeymooned in Ochos Rios, Jamaica, almost 17 years ago, I never thought we would be returning to one of the top Jamaica resorts, to be treated like royalty. But, that’s what happens when Half Moon Jamaica comes calling. During that first trip, when we were youngsters, just barely out of college, we stayed at a very typical all-inclusive resort. Our trip focused on the 3 “Rs” – Red Stripe, reggae, and rum. This trip, though, was entirely different. It focused on relaxation and being treated, yes, like royalty. The rum was still there but I wanted something more. I also realized that there is no surprise that Half Moon resort is one of the top hotels in Montego Bay Jamaica. Check out Half Moon Jamaica Reviews on TripAdvisor Half Moon Jamaica- The Royal Treatment We once stayed at a Sheraton near Universal Studios outside of Los Angeles. They had no rooms left (despite our reservation) and put us in the Presidential Suite. The manager admonished that if the President arrived, we would have to vacate the room for him. We sort of laughed. After all, if the President visits Los Angeles, he is not staying at the Sheraton near Universal Studios. I remembered this story as I researched the history of Half Moon Bay Jamaica. It has been the chosen hotel for celebrities and royalty for decades. After all, Half Moon Jamaica is one of the top Montego Bay resorts. Here is a little history. A group of 16 families purchased 35 acres of beach front, to create villas and homes for themselves, their families, and...
What to Eat in Jamaica – Traditional Jamaican Dishes

What to Eat in Jamaica – Traditional Jamaican Dishes

When planning a trip to Jamaica, especially for foodies, tracking down the best Jamaican food is a priority! The problem is that many people book Jamaica all-inclusive resorts, which is fine. But, then they never leave the resort nor find out what to eat in Jamaica. They don’t seek out a great Jamaican restaurant to try some traditional Jamaican dishes, off the resort property. There’s so much great traditional Jamaican food that you just don’t get at the typical all-inclusive resort. We researched what to eat in Jamaica, and offer a few recommendations for some Jamaican restaurants. But, first I want to answer the frequently asked question: What is Jamaica known for when it comes to food? What is typical Jamaican food? It’s more than just jerk chicken.  Learn more about travel to Montego Bay in our Jamaica Travel Guide, which includes advice on food in Jamaica and what to do in Jamaica. What is Jamaican Cuisine If I had one word to describe the Jamaican diet, it would be hot! Yes, the Jamaican people are known for being amazingly friendly. But, traditional Jamaican food also caters to the local palette, and that means Jamaica food carries some heat! Perhaps those smiles are masking tongues tingling with spice! Jamaican traditional food is not quite as spicy as Szechuan cuisine in China, but it could be up there in the consistency of the heat. It’s slow and steady. But, there is more to the most famous Jamaican food than spice and heat. Authentic Jamaican food is a result of the melting pot that is Jamaica itself. Earliest settlers were Spanish,...

Because when planning a trip to Jamaica, it’s important to know that there is more to Jamaica than rum and all-inclusive resorts. Searching for the Best Jamaican Meat Pie in Montego Bay

Searching for the Best Jamaican Meat Pie in Montego Bay

I was thrilled about returning to Jamaica, 17 years after our first trip, in search of authentic Jamaican food. I assumed we would get our fill of jerk chicken. And, within the first day, I was falling in love with Jamaican brown stew chicken and Jamaican boiled dumplings. But, as we started to inquire more about Jamaican cuisine, one word left coming up – patties – a Jamaican meat pie popular with the locals. Really popular. We had to explore. In this post, we answer the question what is a Jamaican meat pie and where to find the best Jamaican meat patties in Montego Bay. Most interesting, we talk about a decades-long Jamaican meat pies rivalry that I had no idea existed. What is a Jamaican Beef Patty I was at least a little familiar with Caribbean food before arriving back in Jamaica. And I knew there had to be more than Jamaican jerk chicken on offer in Montego Bay. But, as we were searching for a typical Jamaican restaurant, people just kept talking about the patties. It started to become an obsession – to find the best Jamaican meat pie in Montego Bay. And, in the name of research, we ate a lot of Jamaican pie in just a few short days! But, no worries, the Jamaican pie is not as sweet or fattening as an apple pie. It’s totally different. A Jamaican beef patty is similar to other meat patties from Africa or South America. Similar to an empanada, or a Brazilian pastel, it’s at its most basic a meat-filled flaky pie crust. But, there is a...
